About the Organization

 

"The goal of the Edward Johnson Music Foundation is to provide the very best opportunity for children and adults in our community to learn about, enjoy and create music."

 

The Edward Johnson Music Foundation was founded by its namesake, Edward Johnson who was a world-renowned tenor in the first half of the twentieth century and General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1935 to 1950. Today, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation continues its mission of making music an integral part of the community.

 

A strong, successful, independent non-profit organization in Guelph, Ontario, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation is dedicated to providing music education for elementary school children and creating opportunities for people of all ages to learn about, create and enjoy music.   From its inception in 1957, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation has grown to become a passionate organization at the forefront of music education for young people and appreciation for the arts.  It is the Foundation’s belief that a strong foundation of musical understanding will strengthen music education for generations to come. 

In 1957, Edward Johnson, a world-renowned, international opera singer, founded the Edward Johnson Music Foundation to fulfill his dream that children would have access to a musical education and the citizens of Guelph, his hometown, would have the opportunity to experience live music of the highest quality.  

For nearly 50 years, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation has maintained its strong reputation of inspiring and enriching the community through music and music education.  It continues to be an integral and central organization of lifelong learning through music education in Guelph and surrounding communities through the following initiatives:   

  • Do Re Mi (formerly Edward Johnson Musicians in the Schools Program ) – in partnership with the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board brings professional musicians into the classroom to present hands-on, experiential workshops to students. All monies raised from the annual Guelph Wine Gala and Auction go directly to the delivery of this program. 
  • Edward Johnson Music Foundation’s Scholarships and Awards Program provides annual scholarship awards to students pursuing a career in classical music Edward Johnson Scholarships and Awards – Students who have been raised and completed their secondary education while living in Guelph,Wellington and Dufferin Counties will be eligible to apply for this annual scholarship.  
  • Guelpharts.ca / Wellingtonarts.ca website – Serving the City of Guelph and Wellington County, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation, Guelph Arts Council and Guelph Museums will continue to promote the website by connecting local arts and heritage organizations and individual artists with their audience, with each other and with resources which will aid them in the creation, presentation and preservation of art and heritage.  In partnership with Guelph Arts Council and Guelph Museums, the website connects arts and heritage organizations and individual artists with their audience, with each other and with resources to aid them in the creation, presentation and preservation of art and heritage.
  • In celebration of International Music Day, the Edward Johnson Music Foundation brings our community into this annual worldwide celebration of music by showcasing the talents of music organizations, musicians and students at performance venues throughout the City of Guelph.
